Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), one of Indonesia’s leading Islamic universities, continues to strengthen its position as a global center of Islamic higher education. In 2025, UMM has attracted no less than 2,000 prospective international students from 62 countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, and America. This remarkable phenomenon reflects the university’s growing international reputation for academic excellence, inclusive Islamic values, and multicultural engagement. UMM stands not only as an academic institution but as a global hub for nurturing future Muslim leaders committed to both knowledge and humanity.

UMM: Becoming a Magnet for Global Muslim Youth

In a time when the world seeks models of inclusive and advanced Islamic education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) emerges as one of the most attractive destinations for Muslim youth globally. As of mid-2025, UMM has successfully drawn more than 2,000 international student applicants from 62 countries to join its academic programs, ranging from undergraduate to doctoral studies. This milestone solidifies UMM’s position as a rising star among global Islamic universities.

According to Wahyu Kurniawan, M.Pd., Head of UMM’s New Student Recruitment Unit, this extraordinary international interest is the fruit of long-standing institutional development. UMM has risen through prestigious global rankings, such as QS Asian University Rankings (ranked 701), AppliedHE ASEAN Rankings (ranked 73), and Times Higher Education (ranked 1501+ globally). These achievements underscore the global recognition of UMM’s commitment to academic quality blended with Islamic values.

Beyond mere rankings, UMM offers unique academic programs like the International Program for Islamic Studies (IPIS), which provides international students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Islam within a contemporary, inclusive, and globally connected academic environment. This aligns with the mission of Muhammadiyah — promoting Islam as a mercy for all of humanity (rahmatan lil ‘alamin) while producing knowledgeable, ethical, and socially responsible graduates.

UMM’s commitment to its international students goes far beyond the classroom. The campus provides comprehensive support services including immigration assistance, English-language academic guidance, Islamic spiritual mentoring, and comfortable international student dormitories that foster a strong sense of brotherhood (ukhuwah islamiyah) among students from diverse backgrounds.

What makes UMM even more attractive is its dynamic campus life. International students are seen wearing the university’s iconic red blazers while engaging in various cultural, academic, and spiritual activities that build global friendships. In this diverse atmosphere, Islamic values serve as the foundation for mutual respect, tolerance, and intercultural understanding.

UMM’s Vision of Global Islamic Higher Education

UMM stands as one of the largest and most progressive Islamic universities in Southeast Asia, deeply rooted in the values of Muhammadiyah — one of the world’s most prominent Islamic movements. Its mission combines academic excellence, global engagement, and Islamic ethics, creating an ideal environment for the formation of future Muslim scholars, leaders, and professionals.

The university maintains partnerships with over 100 universities across 34 countries, opening avenues for student exchanges, collaborative research, and joint-degree programs. These collaborations not only enhance UMM’s academic profile but also serve as a platform for strengthening global Muslim solidarity through higher education.

UMM’s holistic academic approach integrates hard sciences, social sciences, and Islamic studies, enabling students to face modern global challenges while remaining grounded in their Islamic identity. Programs such as International Relations, Islamic Economics, and International Islamic Law offer students pathways to become contributors to global discourse from an Islamic perspective.

The institution also actively participates in various international academic conferences, research consortia, and global scientific networks, ensuring that its faculty and students are part of the global academic conversation. UMM’s faculty regularly publish in international journals, further strengthening the university’s intellectual influence.

UMM’s commitment to its internationalization vision reflects its strategic motto: From Muhammadiyah for the Nation and the World. This embodies UMM’s aspiration to serve not only the Indonesian ummah but also the broader Muslim community worldwide through transformative education and leadership development.

UMM: A Lighthouse of Modern Islamic Civilization

With the ever-growing number of international students, UMM’s campus has become a microcosm of the global Muslim ummah. Students from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Cyprus, among others, study side by side, building friendships that transcend borders and cultures.

Through the educational experience at UMM, these young Muslims not only gain knowledge but also embody the spirit of ukhuwah Islamiyah (Islamic brotherhood), cooperation, and global understanding. As Wahyu Kurniawan stated, “Our goal is not merely to increase the number of foreign students but to create a truly global Islamic education that contributes to global peace, development, and mutual respect.”

Looking forward, UMM remains committed to expanding its global impact by enhancing digital registration systems, increasing the availability of international-language academic programs, and developing more international joint research and community engagement projects.

In the words of UMM Rector Prof. Nazaruddin Malik, “This is more than just a university. UMM is a house of knowledge, a center for modern Islamic civilization that radiates its light from Malang to the entire world.”

As thousands of international students now walk the serene and vibrant paths of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, the world witnesses a living example of how Islamic values and global academic excellence can harmoniously merge. UMM has proven that a university rooted in Islamic principles can shine as a beacon for modern, inclusive, and globally impactful Islamic higher education. The world is watching — and UMM is ready to lead.
